Once upon a time there was a little family who got to visit one of the most dreamy places in the world. Not kidding, Lucerne is the setting of a real life fairy tale, complete with swans gliding around the emerald lake. Even on a cloudy winter day, the city stuns the senses. We had just one day to spend there, which was barely enough, but suspect it would not have been nearly enough if it was spring or summertime! If you have just a little time, here are the things you can't miss...
Visit the Old Chapel Bridge. Right in the heart of the city, you can't miss this 14th century bridge with its rich history depicted through beautiful paintings for your viewing pleasure as you wander through.
Cruise Lake Lucerne. We opted for a lunch cruise, and it was everything we wanted and more! This was the only activity we planned and booked prior to arriving in Switzerland. I think the experience was even better in the "off season" as the boat was not super crowded so we had a nice window table to ourselves to enjoy each other, the food and the endless eye candy that was the Swiss landscape! I had fairly low expectations for the food, but it was one of the best meals we had on our trip. I opted for the 3 course seafood meal and it was delicious! The set up was elegant yet accessible. Sis enjoyed looking out the window at the water. Not sure how this would have gone if she was a toddler, but there was space outside of the dining area that an active kid could've burned a little energy without bugging the other diners. The boat toured the lake with several stops along the way with special views of Mount Rigi on a clear day.
Stroll Old Town (day and night). Classic architecture, a medieval wall, beautiful building paintings, intricate fountains, and endless watch shops are all treasures you find around every corner of this city. Stop in a bakery or chocolate shop for a nice indulgence, you won't be sorry. I had no shame as I scarfed down a custard filled doughnut with my delightful cappuccino. In December Lucerne is a whole different world at night. Christmas decorations, beautifully lighted trees, streets and bridges that make the Old Town stroll a whole new experience. There are also Christmas markets and an ice rink during the holidays.
Bring your kids to this gorgeous place so they can experience the magic for themselves. Any age is appropriate, and I would think kids of "Disney" age would be especially enchanted by what they'd see. I know there has to be many more special things to do and see in this region. Please feel free to add your comments if you have other sights you would add to your itinerary.
